UMICH Course / Sophomore Studio

This is a semester project featuring a 3-piece digital series, uncovering the various emotions endured during compulsive skin picking (also known as dermatillomania.) This series is broken down into three different stages, each one indicative of: dissociation, relief, and shame. These three stages are not chosen at random- they serve as the three most prominent emotions present during skin picking as well as the focus of each composition.

This project topic was chosen from personal experience, as I am one of many people who suffer from this condition. Although this is a fairly common disorder, most people are unaware of its presence and how it manifests itself within our bodies. Something as minuscule as picking our own skin can have the most profound impact on our live's, and in this case, skin picking has put a huge damper on my quality of life. I wanted to create this series as a way to generate awareness about dermatillomania as well as illustrate the emotional cycle of the act itself.
